Marbella, Spain – According to a recent study by the Andalusian Energy Agency, just 3.6% of homes have a solar installation in 2025.
The study found that 171,000 properties had a residential installation at the end of last year.
It’s a small fraction of the 4.6 million homes in Andalusia. The region is the sunniest in Spain – receiving double the annual sun hours of northern Bilbao – and six of Spain’s 10 sunniest provinces are in Andalusia.
Despite the favourable climate, Andalusia remains the region with the second-top residential solar installed capacity in Spain, after Catalonia, according to Spain’s Association of Renewable Energy Companies (APPA).
“It shocked me to see how few homes have gone solar in Andalusia, especially when an installation can eliminate your energy bills”, Roman Mitchell, the co-owner of Marblanc Solar, said.
“Solar energy is no longer an expensive investment. With affordable financing deals, anyone can now see instant savings in their bill with an installation.”
Adam Millington, the co-owner of Marblanc Solar and a qualified electrician, said that a “poor standard” of service may also be the blame.
“We’ve received over 25 callouts this year from homeowners with a system that’s not been legalised, asking us to register the system,” he said. “In a few cases the original installer used the wrong cables and created a severe fire risk.”
He added that Marblanc Solar’s growth in the past two years to becoming the top-rated installer on the Costa del Sol is thanks to their “industry-leading” post-installation services and 25-year workmanship warranties.
How many homes have installed solar across Spain?
There were 483,930 residential solar installations in Spain at the end of 2024, according to APPA.
With 27 million homes in Spain, this means 1.5% have a home solar energy system.
These figures show a low uptake but represent a massive increase from only a few years ago, after the infamous ‘sun tax’ was scrapped in 2019.
Between 2019 to the end of 2024, the number of residential solar installations in Andalusia has increased 65%.
Which regions have the most solar installations in Spain?
Catalonia, Andalusia and the Valencian Community combined are responsible for over half of all solar installations in Spain, according to APPA.
Andalusia’s installed residential capacity is 1.442 MW and represents 17% of the total installed capacity at 8.585 at the end of 2024.
The five autonomous communities in Spain with the highest residential installed capacity are:
- Catalonia – 1.524 MW (18%)
- Andalusia – 1.443 MW (17%)
- Valencian Community – 1.171 MW (14%)
- Castilla-La Mancha – 824 MW (10%)
- Madrid – 628 MW (7%)
Installing solar in Andalusia can increase property price by 4.1%
Give the relatively low penetration of residential solar in the market, an installation is a key differentiator in the real estate market.
According to Vincent Christoffersen, founder of the Marbella-based real estate agency Vice Estate, buyers are increasingly asking for homes with solar power.
Vincent told Marblanc Solar that a solar installation can increase your house price by “4.1%” according to industry studies.
“A solar installation that eliminates energy bills is very attractive to buyers on the Costa del Sol,” Vincent said.
“My estate agency helps buyers find their dream home, and more and more that’s a home which is both beautiful and energy efficient.”
Vincent added that buyers looking for investment properties in Marbella are also keen on solar. For example, thanks to the lower operational expenses that solar can provide to rental properties.
