Solar Installation: 24 Solar Panels in Guadaiza, Benahavís

We cut a client's electricity costs by over €4,300 a year after installing 24 solar panels and a battery on their villa in Benahavís, Málaga.

About the Project

A homeowner in the Guadaiza urbanisation of Benahavís came to Marblanc Solar to bring down some of the highest electricity bills we have seen on a private villa. We designed a 14.4kWp system of 24 panels, paired with a 9.04kWh battery and a full set of panel-level optimisers to manage shading from the surrounding trees and neighbouring roofs. The installation is projected to save the client over €4,300 a year.

Background

The owner of a detached villa in Guadaiza, in the municipality of Benahavís in Málaga, approached us with a straightforward problem: an electricity bill of close to €9,812 a year, averaging €817 a month. For a household consuming at that level, mains electricity had become a significant running cost, and the client wanted to bring it under control while drawing more of their power from their own roof rather than the grid.

As with our other installations in Benahavís, the project began with a free solar survey. Our team visited the property to assess the roof, carried out a drone survey to map the usable space and any sources of shade, and ran the consumption data through our energy modelling software to size the system accurately against the client’s real usage.

The assessment, carried out by our survey engineer Enrique Ferreiro, confirmed both the scale of the demand and the main technical challenge: the villa sits among mature trees and close to taller neighbouring roofs, so parts of the array would fall into shade at different points of the day. Our energy assessment took into account:

Because of that shading, a TIGO optimiser was specified for every one of the 24 panels, so that shade on a single panel would not drag down the output of the whole string, and each panel could be monitored individually. Battery storage was built into the proposal from the outset. As with our battery and backup box installation elsewhere in Benahavís, where the client wanted essential circuits to keep running into the night, the 9.04kWh battery here lets the household draw on stored solar energy in the evening rather than buying from the grid. On these figures, the system is projected to cut the client’s bill by €4,334 a year, taking the average monthly bill from €817.64 down to around €456.47 in the first year.

Solution

Our installation team fitted all 24 panels as a single block on the villa’s main pitched roof, the one plane with enough uninterrupted space to take the full array. With a TIGO optimiser fitted behind each panel, the system is protected against the shade thrown by the surrounding trees and neighbouring rooflines: if one panel is shaded, the rest of the array carries on producing at full output, and the client can see the performance of every individual panel through the monitoring app.

The panels were secured on a Sunfer MicroRail structure engineered for the roof, with all DC and AC cabling routed cleanly out of sight for a tidy finish. High-grade sealing membranes and compounds were applied at every fixing point to preserve the integrity of the roof and leave a weather-resistant, leak-proof result.

Once the system was commissioned, we secured a feed-in tariff for the client, supported by a virtual battery arrangement so that surplus daytime generation is credited rather than lost. Over the following two weeks we monitored the household’s electricity use day by day, fine-tuned appliance and plug timers to shift more consumption into daylight hours, and set the client up on the solar app. They were then added to our Monday-to-Sunday WhatsApp group, part of the aftersales care we provide so there is always a direct line to the team.

Results

The completed installation is projected to save the client €4,334.02 a year on electricity at their villa in Benahavís, cutting the average monthly bill from €817.64 to €456.47 – a reduction of 44%. With savings at that level, the system is expected to pay for itself within four to five years. At 44%, this system does not reach the 80% bill reduction Marblanc Solar aims for on most installations, and it is worth being clear about why: this is an unusually high-consumption property, with an annual bill close to €9,812, far higher than we typically see for a villa of this size. A single roof plane will only hold so many panels, so rather than overpromise, the system was sized to make the best use of the available roof while still delivering a strong return. Measured over the life of the system, the investment carries a projected return of 428% and a net present value of more than €101,000 – a strong result even before the 44% headline is taken into account. The panel-level optimisation and battery storage together ensure the client gets the most out of every kilowatt-hour the roof can produce.
